Investigation of the improved delivery valve for H25/33 |

Last April, 2011, HHI-EMD issued Service Letter, ¡°HHI-HSM-SL-11-009, Design Improvement of Fuel Injection Pump Delivery Valve for H25/33¡±. The main content was to introduce the improved delivery valve (Fig. 2) for increase of the nozzle life time by removal of secondary impulse of nozzle seat. To ensure the good injection condition, HHI-EMD supplied the new delivery valve to each vessel which had been applied with H25/33.
Field test results of the new delivery valve at 2000 R/H showed quite satisfactory as shown on the Fig. 3 & 4. Microscopic photo showed no cavitation marks on the seat/needle and the spray condition was quite close to new atomizer.
If the supplied delivery valve has not been installed in the fuel injection pump yet, please replace the old delivery valve with new one immediately. The replacement work can be simply done by the owner¡¯s personnel without difficulties referring to the instruction described in attached technical circular. |

Confirm tightening of the bolts for the timing gears of H17/28 [Urgent] |

Recently, we¡¯ve experienced loosened bolts (S35000-291, M12) for idle gear on H17/28. After through investigations we have concluded that the loosening of the bolts is caused by improper tightening. In order to make sure of the reliability of engine operation, HHI-EMD recommends you to inspect immediately the tightening condition of the bolts for the timing gears (Idle, Camshaft & Crankshaft gear). If you detect any loosened bolts, please re-tighten the bolts properly as following procedure illustrated on Fig. 2 & 3
Although the Molycote is stated on the previous manual, re-tightening with Loctite243 does not need to be done, if the tightening condition is normal. Please paste Loctite243 whenever convenient. We hope the above information would be of service to you. |

Confirm tightening according to the maintenance schedule for All HiMSEN engines |

Recently, we¡¯ve been asked about the maintenance guidance for our HiMSEN engine. According to our instruction manual (Section No. G09100), ¡°The major fasteners ? Retightening¡± shall be confirmed at 200 hours after overhaul/New. One of our Customers would like to know whether this tightening has to be confirmed after new engine delivery.
In order to make sure the reliability of engine operation, we strongly recommend the tightening check shall be confirmed at each overhaul interval schedule from new engine delivery and overhaul of the each component. For example, please confirm the tightening of Nuts for Counter weight after 200 running hours from new engine delivery and also in case of overhaul or renewal of counter weight.

Uncertified HiMSEN Fuel Injection Equipment Maker |

The purpose of this Service Letter is to clarify on certain misinformation disseminated in the market by a maker of fuel injection equipments ("FIE"). Recently, it came to our attention that one FIE maker - SHINSUNG DIESEL Co., (also known as HEARTMAN Co.,Ltd.) - advertised itself as "a certified cooperation company" of Hyundai Heavy Industries ("HHI").
Although SHINSUNG (or HEARTMAN) is presently working together with HHI to develop an atomizer with an improved performance, such description as a "certified cooperation company" is incorrect in that HHI has yet to certify SHINSUNG DIESEL Co., or HEARTMAN Co.,Ltd. as an official FIE maker for HiMSEN engines.
Please note clearly that, as of now, the certified FIE maker for HiMSEN is NICO Precision Co. and that until some other makers are added to HHI's certified maker, engines employing FIE of NIP are the only ones eligible for HHI's warranty service.
We, the HiMSEN engine maker, will continue to improve our product and diversify FIE makers to better serve our customers' needs.

Lubricating oil treatment by constant L.O purifier operation |

In order to ensure the healthy system lubricating oil condition on HiMSEN engine, the proper lubricating oil treatment should be carried out by engine operators regularly. By minimizing the risk of lubricating oil contamination, not only the lifetime of internal moving parts such as piston ring can be extended, but also any blocking of L.O passages in T/C or piston by impurities in L.O can be avoided. Therefore, you are kindly recommended to carry out the L.O treatment as follows.
1) Keep the lubricant inlet temperature of L.O purifier at 93 ~ 95¡É to ensure the best purification efficiency. 2) Operate L.O purifier continuously for the engine under operation. 3) Top up the lube oil regularly. 4) Shorten the sludge discharging interval of L.O purifier if the L.O consumption is lower than normal. 5) Analyze system L.O regularly. |

Design Improvement of Fuel Injection Pump Delivery Valve for HiMSEN H25/33 Engine |

As a part of our continuous efforts to improve HiMSEN Engine itself, there has been a modification on fuel injection pump delivery valve of HiMSEN H25/33 engines as follows.
We¡¯ve noticed that the fluctuation of fuel injection pressure causes the unexpected wear-down on the fuel nozzle and eventually it makes the life time of fuel nozzle shortened and sometimes it causes the secondary injection to be removed.
The pattern of fluctuation on fuel injection pressure for both the current delivery valve and the new one is as follows.
The purpose of this improvement is mainly to improve the injection pressure pattern. The validity of this improvement has been thoroughly proved and confirmed through our laboratory test. For more technical details, please find the attached technical circular.

Recently, there has been a modification on fuel injection valve and fuel injection pump for HiMSEN H25/33 engines.
The purpose of the modification on fuel injection valve is to improve life time of nozzle and the fuel nozzle tip running condition. (Less carbon deposit than the current design) It leads to reduce the smoke emission level when running with heavy fuel oil at low load and part load operation. At next, the purpose of the modification on fuel injection pump is to maximize the sealing effect of plunger/barrel inside not to cause contamination of L.O in a sump tank and also to avoid the fuel pump sticking problem. For more technical details, please find the attached technical circular.
HHI-EMD has developed these new fuel injection valves/pumps, and this concept will be the standard on new-building H25/33 engines since January, 2011. Furthermore, HHI-EMD has decided to supply these improved parts to your good vessels equipped with H25/33 engines in guarantee period as of 30th May, 2010. These parts will be supplied at free of charge for our valued customers¡¯ satisfaction.
In this regard, kindly advise us of the delivery address where you wish to receive the modified fuel injection valves/pumps with fitting accessories by sea freight since the middle of April, 2011. (Due to the manufacturing schedule, they will be available since the middle of April, 2011). If you have any local forwarder in Korea, we are also available to dispatch the spare parts there so please inform us of the address.
Meanwhile, once the modification is applied to an engine, the current-design fuel injection valve and atomizer spare parts are not compatible anymore, so you¡¯re kindly requested to consume all current-design spare fuel valves/pumps and atomizers on board first and then install the improved parts delivered.
Please be noted that the above modifications can be carried out by owner¡¯s personnel without difficulty referring to the attached replacement procedure. Meanwhile, in case that the vessel needs HHI-EMD's support, HHI-EMD is available to assist the vessel by arranging the supervisor when the vessel calls to the ports where HHI-EMD Branch office is located. Recently, there has been a modification on fuel injection valve atomizer and fuel injection pump sealing method for HiMSEN H21/32 engines.
The purpose of the modification on atomizer is to improve life time of nozzle. At next, the purpose of the modification on fuel injection pump sealing (from o-ring/back-up ring to Teflon Spring ring) is to maximize the sealing effect of plunger/barrel inside not to cause contamination of L.O in a sump tank. For more technical details, please find the attached technical circular.

Wrong installation of Valve Spindle Springs(inner) for H32/40 HiMSEN Engine |

Recently, we¡¯ve been reported that some of the valve spindle springs (inner) with wrong direction have been installed in H32/40 HiMSEN engines. As you can see in the below pictures, an outer spring is winded in right hand direction and an inner spring is supposed to be winded in left hand direction.
Meanwhile, in some engines, we¡¯ve noticed that both inner and outer spring have same direction which is right hand direction.
Basically, we assume that even if the same direction springs are installed, it might not affect the safety engine operation.
In this meantime, in order to prevent any unexpected situations, HHI-EMD has decided to replace the right hand direction inner springs with the left hand direction ones and it will be carried out by our service engineers when your good vessels get the schedule with enough time to complete the work. |

Replacement of Rotocap for H32/40 HiMSEN Engine |

This letter is to inform our customers of the modification on rotocap applied with up-dated disc spring to increase their reliability for H32/40 HiMSEN Engine.
Recently we have received a report related to the dent phenomenon of disc spring from the ship owner. According to our close investigation done by R & D dep¡¯t, such an undesirable dent phenomenon can be occurred on rotocap since the spring disc is made of round bar material.
Please be noted that the improved spring disc of rotocap is made of rolled steel materials in order to increase the safety factor of the product.
Therefore the disc spring are recommended to replace into the intensified ones on the above at the most earliest stage to ensure the further reliability and prevent secondary problem by the broken of disc spring unexpected.
The improvement part will be delivered and installed by HHI-EMD in the shortest amount of time under free of charge base to our valued customers.

Intake Air Chamber Drain Hole Chocked |

Through our service attendance, we¡¯ve noticed that some vessels¡¯ the water/air drain hole of intake air chamber were chocked as below photos. In this case, it is possible that the remaining water inside the chamber penetrates into the combustion chamber and it can affect the combustion chamber inside parts and T/C.
In order to avoid this kind of failure, we¡¯d like to recommend you to check and clean up the intake air chamber inside and drain line regularly not to be chocked. |
